These roaches are slow, heavy and drawn to cool, wet places, so the plan starts with where the water is. Treat the roach without drying the spot, and more arrive.
Are water bugs and Oriental cockroaches the same thing?
In Ohio, usually yes. When a customer says water bug in a basement, they are almost always describing the Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis). The name sticks because the insect shows up near drains, pipes and wet floors.
True water bugs are a different group, large aquatic insects that live in ponds and swim. They do not infest basements, and they are not roaches. If the dark insect is crawling across a dry or damp floor indoors, you are looking at a roach.

What does an Oriental cockroach look like?
- Adults are about an inch to an inch and a quarter long, dark brown to nearly black, with a glossy, oily sheen
- Males have short wings that cover about three quarters of the body, and females have only small wing pads, so they look nearly wingless
- Neither sex flies, and both move in a slow, deliberate way compared with a German or brown-banded roach
- Nymphs are dark reddish-brown, wingless and often found in the same damp cracks as the adults
- Egg capsules are dark reddish-brown, about three-eighths of an inch, and hold around 16 eggs
A distinguishing habit is that Oriental roaches struggle to climb smooth vertical surfaces. That is why you find them trapped in a bathtub, a laundry sink or a basement floor drain bucket.

Call (209) 563-1650Why do black roaches show up in damp basements?
They tolerate cooler temperatures than other household roaches, but they cannot do without moisture. Leaky pipes, a sump pit, a weeping foundation wall, a washing machine hose or a poorly graded yard all supply what they need.
Outdoors, they live in leaf litter, mulch beds, under flagstones and in water meter boxes next to the house. Activity often peaks in warm months, then they drift indoors when the ground dries or when heavy rain floods their shelter. Heavy summer storms are a common trigger for calls.
Their life cycle is slow. Nymphs can take a year or longer to mature, and females deposit capsules in hidden, sheltered spots rather than carrying them. That means a mature outdoor population is hard to wipe out, so we aim to stop them from settling indoors.
The one-year life cycle and why timing matters
Oklahoma State Extension reports about 12 months and 7 molts from egg to adult. A female carries her capsule for around 30 hours, then drops it in a sheltered spot. The capsule holds up to 16 eggs, and a female makes about eight in her life. Adults tend to appear in late spring and early summer, so treatment in that window meets the roaches in the open, and follow-ups cover the young that hatch later.

Oriental roach exterminator: what we do on site
We follow the water first, then the roach. These are the steps in a typical visit:
- We find the moisturePipes, sump pits, floor drains, water heater drip pans and window wells get checked with a flashlight and, where needed, a moisture reading.
- We map the harborageOriental roaches rest in wall bases, under stored boxes and in the gap behind a stud wall. Monitors tell us which ones are active.
- We treat inside and outCrack and crevice applications go where the roaches hide, with a perimeter treatment along the foundation and thresholds. Products are applied per label directions.
- We point out what to fixA dripping fitting, clogged gutter or soil sloping toward the house keeps the problem going. We tell you which ones matter most.
- We check backFollow-ups are monthly or bimonthly, depending on what the monitors show.
Crawl spaces, plumbing and door jambs
Penn State Extension found these roaches often enter along plumbing, coming up through the floor from a crawl space, and under door and window jambs. Nebraska Extension adds that covering basement drains with window screening and sealing gaps around pipes and tubs cuts the traffic. Cornell's guidance puts bait near floor drains and in damp crawl spaces. We check those routes in that order and tell you which ones need a plumber.

Water bug control: drying the building out
Treatment buys time, but moisture decides whether the problem returns. These changes make the biggest difference:
- Run a dehumidifier in the basement and empty it before it overflows
- Repair dripping supply lines, drain fittings and washing machine hoses
- Move mulch and leaf litter a few inches back from the foundation
- Clear gutters and extend downspouts away from the wall
- Store basement items on shelves in plastic bins instead of cardboard on the floor
- Seal gaps around pipes and cables where they enter the foundation

Columbus Health Code §221.03 calls for openings of half an inch or more within 48 inches of ground level to be sealed (Columbus Public Health), which covers many of the gaps these roaches use. If one species is hard to pin down, our German vs American cockroach guide can help rule out the others.
How much does Oriental cockroach treatment cost?
The price depends on the extent of the infestation, how many areas need treatment and how large the exterior perimeter is. A single damp basement corner is a smaller job than a whole crawl space or a multi-unit building.
We explain the price before work starts. Because the most useful fixes are often about water, we are plain about which parts are plumbing or landscaping and not pest control, so you do not pay us for work another trade should do.
Water bug treatment in Ohio: the product label and ODA's business search
Oriental roaches live outdoors in mulch and meter boxes as well as in the cellar, so a plan usually includes a perimeter application. EPA treats the product label as the rule for where and how often such a product may go. Penn State Extension adds that residual sprays and foggers inside a structure are of little value against this species, and that baiting and moisture control carry the plan.
Ohio requires a company applying pesticides for hire to hold an ODA Pesticide Business License, and ODA's business search is open to the public. Before you sign, ask what will go outdoors, what will go inside, and which repairs are yours, such as leaks and drain covers. A quote that offers only an interior spray is worth a question.
Why Boydes Exterminating for this work
We follow the water source before we treat, since a roach that loves wet concrete will be back if the concrete stays wet.
Oriental roaches are one of the four species on our work list, alongside American, German and brown-banded roaches.
If the real fix is a plumber or a downspout, we say so. Customers in reviews call the pricing fair and mention no surprise charges.

Oriental Cockroach Control: common questions
Are water bugs and Oriental cockroaches the same thing?
Usually, yes. In Ohio a water bug in the basement is almost always an Oriental cockroach, a slow dark roach that likes damp places. True water bugs are large aquatic insects found in ponds and do not infest homes. If the insect is indoors on a floor or in a sink, treat it as a roach.
Why do black roaches show up in damp basements?
They need moisture and tolerate cool temperatures, so a damp basement fits them well. Leaks, a weeping foundation, a sump pit and humid air all attract them. They also live outdoors in mulch and leaf litter and move in when the soil dries or a heavy rain floods their shelter.
Do Oriental cockroaches fly?
No. Males have short wings that cover part of the body, and females have only small wing pads, but neither can fly. They are slow crawlers and often get stuck in tubs and sinks because they cannot climb smooth vertical surfaces. If a dark roach is flying, it is another species.
When are Oriental roaches most active?
Adult activity tends to peak in the warmer months, and calls often follow heavy summer rain. Because the nymphs mature slowly, you can also find young ones at other times of year. Indoor populations stay near moisture and can be active whenever the basement stays damp.
Can I get rid of them with a dehumidifier alone?
It helps a lot but rarely finishes the job. Drying the space removes the draw, yet roaches already in wall voids and under stored items stay until they are treated. We combine treatment with moisture fixes, because either one alone tends to let the problem return.
