What sets Hilliard apart is water. The city lies between the Scioto River and Big Darby Creek, and the median home was built in 1997, with about 31% rented. Damp ground and newer landscaping make ants and wasps the first calls, with mice and earwigs close behind.
Scioto and Big Darby Creek ground: ants, earwigs and damp crawl spaces
Soil near two waterways holds moisture longer, and moisture is what earwigs, silverfish and many ants want. A 1997 house with a landscaped bed along the slab gives them a place to live, and any crack at the sill gives them a way in. Rain in late spring pushes them toward doors and window wells.
The first step is outside. We look for mulch against siding, downspouts that empty at the foundation, and wood in contact with the ground. Our earwig control page explains why these insects show up in clusters after storms, and what we do about it.

From Hilliard's Station to Cemetery Road: how Hilliard is laid out
Hilliard began as Hilliard's Station on the Piqua and Indiana Railroad, was platted in 1853, became a village in 1869 and a city in 1960. Rail service ended in 1962, and the Heritage Rail Trail now starts on Center Street in Old Hilliard. The oldest buildings cluster around that station and Main Street, within a few blocks of 1990s streets.
The population went from 11,796 in 1990 to 37,114 in 2020 (Wikipedia), and the city runs more than 25 parks. Cemetery Road and Main Street are the main roads, and Big Darby Creek, an Ohio State Scenic River, lies to the west. Houses from the fast-growth decades back onto parks, trails and creek ground, which brings mosquitoes, wasps and mice close to the walls.
Old Hilliard homes versus 1990s subdivisions
The middle of the city, around Old Hilliard, has older homes and small commercial buildings, while the subdivisions that make up much of the city came later. A 1997 median means more recent builds than the inner-ring suburbs, so you see ants and wasps more often than aging foundations.
Older houses near the center still bring mouse calls in fall. If your home has a crawl space, brick that has shifted, or an old addition, mention that when you call. Our post on finding mouse entry points in walls shows where we start looking.

Hilliard visits from Dunning Rd, 20 minutes out
Call with your address and the pest. We group Hilliard stops with other west side visits, and same-day service depends on how the schedule looks. You will usually speak with the owner, and the price is explained before work starts.
At each visit we ask about allergies, pets and kids, then inspect outside before we go in. A perimeter treatment is a band of product applied around the foundation, per label directions. When a return visit belongs in the plan, we give you the date range. Follow-ups run biweekly, monthly, bimonthly or as needed.

Event crowds near the Franklin County Fairgrounds
The Franklin County Fairgrounds is in Hilliard, and wherever large outdoor events serve food, flies and yellow jackets tend to follow in late summer. Homes near a big venue are worth watching. If a yellow jacket nest turns up in the ground or a wall, our yellow jacket removal page explains why those nests need prompt attention.

Old Hilliard to the shop: our west side route
The shop has been owner-run since 1990, and Hilliard sits on the same west side route as Dublin, Upper Arlington and Lincoln Village. With homes from the 1990s beside creek ground, much of the work is seasonal and predictable, so we can usually tell you on the phone what to expect and how a visit will go.
Pest control in Hilliard: common questions
How soon can Boydes get to Hilliard from northeast Columbus?
Allow about 20 minutes for the drive. When we can arrive depends on the day's route and open slots, and some customers mention same-day visits in reviews. Call in the morning with the address and what you are seeing, and we will say whether today is realistic or whether to book tomorrow.
Why do ants and wasps show up around newer Hilliard homes?
Newer landscaping provides food, water and shelter. Mulch beds and irrigation near a 1997 foundation attract ants, and wide soffits, decks and play sets give wasps sheltered nest sites. Close to the Scioto and Big Darby Creek, damp ground adds earwigs and mosquitoes to that list. We start by finding what is drawing them.
Do you treat mice in Hilliard houses that back onto fields or creek corridors?
Yes. Mice often move toward warm foundations once nights turn cold, and edge-of-subdivision lots see it first. We look for entry points at utility lines, garage doors and sill plates, seal what we can, and place traps or bait per label directions. Columbus rules use a half-inch mark as a benchmark.
Do you offer one-time service in Hilliard, or only contracts?
Both. You can book a one-time visit and stop there, or add recurring service if the pests keep returning each season. We explain the price up front, and it depends on the pest and how far the infestation has spread.
