The method suits people who can leave the barrier alone for the period the label sets. It does not suit every home, so ask which treatments we can offer for your rooms before you decide.
What is Aprehend, the fungal bed bug treatment?
Aprehend is a biopesticide registered with the EPA. Its active ingredient is spores of Beauveria bassiana, a fungus found in soil. Biopesticide is the EPA's term for a pesticide based on a living organism instead of a synthetic compound, and the product label still governs how it is used.
A pest control company applies it as a barrier on surfaces where bed bugs travel. A bed bug that crosses the barrier picks up spores. The fungus then infects the bug, and bugs that carry spores back to their hiding spot can expose others there.
That is a different path from a traditional spray, which kills through contact with the product or its dried residue. The label sets what Aprehend is approved to do, and we do not claim more than that.

How is an Aprehend barrier different from a spray you buy at the store?
Store-bought bed bug sprays are meant to kill what they touch, and bed bugs respond to them by hiding deeper. An Aprehend barrier is meant to be crossed. The bugs do not need to be sprayed directly.
The trade-off is time and discipline. The fungus needs time to work, so you may still see live bugs for a while after the barrier goes down. The barrier also depends on being left in place. Wiping it, mopping it or covering it with another product works against it.
| Aprehend barrier | Traditional residual spray | |
|---|---|---|
| How bugs are exposed | They cross the barrier and pick up spores | They contact treated cracks, seams and voids |
| Speed of the kill | Takes time after exposure | Varies by product and contact |
| Your main job | Leave the barrier undisturbed | Prep rooms and keep every follow-up |
| Biggest way it fails | Barrier cleaned, painted over or covered | Missed follow-up visits |
How fast does it work, and what about resistant bed bugs?
Penn State researchers tested Aprehend on four bed bug strains, including field-collected strains resistant to the pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin. Mortality ran from 95.5 to 99 percent within 14 days on all four. The pyrethroid reached only 16 to 40 percent on the resistant strains.
An earlier Penn State study found that a barrier application produced over 95 percent mortality within a week, as bugs spread the fungus through their hiding places. Expect days, not hours. If you still see live bugs after the period your plan sets, call us before you reach for a store spray.

Aprehend prep is not the same as the checklist for a spray or heat job, and mixing the two causes problems. We give you the protocol for your home, and it governs if anything here differs. Expect these themes:
- Access: clear the floor edges, beds and furniture legs so the barrier can go where bed bugs actually walk
- Clutter: reduce piles that hide baseboards and block the bed area
- Laundry: ask us before you launder or bag everything, because the old rule does not always apply
- Leftover products: tell us about any spray, powder or fogger you have used, since another product on the same surfaces can matter
- Pets and people: tell us who lives in the home so we can plan around them
The general habits in our bed bug preparation page still help. Just do not start bagging or moving belongings between rooms until we confirm the protocol for your method.

How does an Aprehend visit run, from inspection to follow-up?
- We confirm the diagnosisAprehend only makes sense when we know where the bugs are traveling. We look at beds, furniture and the walls near them first.
- You get the protocolWe tell you what to move, what to leave, what to launder and what to avoid putting on treated surfaces.
- We apply the barrierThe barrier goes down where bed bugs move, applied per label directions. Pets, children and allergies shape the plan, so we ask first.
- We give you the re-entry and care instructionsThe label sets re-entry, and our plain list covers which surfaces stay untouched and for how long.
- We check on progressWe review what you are seeing and decide whether a repeat visit or a different approach is needed.

What should you avoid once the barrier is down?
The label tells us the period the barrier has to stay put, and we pass it to you in writing. During that window, treat the treated strips as off limits. Do not mop, steam or scrub them, and do not spray another product over them.
Daily life carries on around it. Bed bugs are meant to cross the barrier on their way to you, so using the room as normal is expected. If you are unsure whether a task counts as disturbing the barrier, call us first. Ask us about mattress encasements and bedding laundering too, because both can touch treated areas.

Is Aprehend the right bed bug treatment for you?
Aprehend fits a home where the barrier can stay undisturbed and where you can handle a protocol that is stricter in some ways than regular prep. It is a poorer fit if the room is getting repainted or deep cleaned, or if the building has heavy traffic between units.
Using Aprehend in a rental
In a building with two or more units, Columbus Health Code makes the owner responsible for eliminating pests. Tell the property manager before the barrier goes down, because a maintenance crew that repaints or mops baseboards can undo it. Ask for the work to be scheduled around the label period.
In a shared building, apartment bed bug treatment explains what changes. If you are not sure whether you even have bed bugs, start with a bed bug inspection. If you want a faster, concentrated treatment, ask about heat.
What affects the price of an Aprehend treatment?
Treatment type and spread of the infestation set the cost, and you hear it before we begin. Rooms involved, clutter, the layout around beds and whether neighboring units are part of the problem all change the quote.
A second visit may be part of the plan. Our bed bug treatment cost guide explains how costs shift between methods.
Aprehend in Ohio: the EPA label rule and the ODA business license
Aprehend is an EPA-registered biopesticide, and EPA states that using any pesticide in a way that is inconsistent with its label is a violation of federal law. For you, that means the label decides how wide the barrier is, where it goes and how long it must stay undisturbed. Ask the company for the product name, the application sites and the care period in writing.
Ohio requires any company that applies pesticides for hire to hold an ODA Pesticide Business License, and ODA's public business search lets you look up a company before you sign. Compare that answer with the plan on paper, and do not agree to a barrier you have not seen described.
Why Boydes Exterminating for this work
We offer Aprehend with its own prep protocol, not a generic checklist copied from spray jobs.
We describe what the product is approved to do and tell you when an outcome takes time, not that every bug drops immediately.
Aprehend sits next to heat and residual treatment, so the choice follows your building and not our inventory.
We ask each time we come, and we plan around the answers. Follow-up visits can be biweekly, monthly, bimonthly or as needed.

Where we do this work
- Columbus About 56% of Columbus homes are rented, and a barrier works only when tenants and managers both leave baseboards alone.
- Whitehall Roughly 61% of Whitehall homes are rented, so a barrier needs a landlord who agrees not to repaint or mop over it.
- Westerville Otterbein University student moves bring used furniture, and a barrier around the bed suits a rented room.
- Reynoldsburg About 39% of Reynoldsburg homes are rented, so barriers around beds fit many apartments and rented houses.
- Lincoln Village A planned community begun in 1955 with 38% of homes rented, where houses and apartments both need a barrier plan.
- Grandview Heights About 43% of homes are rented, including Grandview Yard apartments open since 2012, where the building must cooperate.
- Dublin The median home dates to 1996 and 23% are rented, so many households can leave a barrier alone for the label period.
- Huber Ridge A 1969 median build year and 30% rented, with homes close together between I-270 and SR 161.
- Bexley Capital University student moves and a 1944 median build year mean older houses and rented rooms near campus.
We apply Aprehend barriers in homes across Columbus, and in Whitehall, Westerville and Dublin when the plan fits. Not sure if we reach you? Look through our service areas or call.
Aprehend Bed Bug Treatment: common questions
What is Aprehend and how does it work on bed bugs?
Aprehend is an EPA-registered biopesticide made from Beauveria bassiana spores. It is applied as a barrier. Bed bugs crossing it pick up spores, and the fungus infects them over time. Bugs that return to their hiding spot can pass spores to others. How it is used, and for how long, follows the product label.
How do I prepare for an Aprehend treatment?
Follow the protocol we give you, because it differs from spray or heat prep. In general, you clear access to beds and floor edges, tell us about any products you have already used and avoid cleaning surfaces we will treat. Do not bag everything or shift belongings between rooms until we confirm what your job needs.
How is Aprehend different from a spray?
A traditional spray kills bugs through contact or a dried residue. Aprehend is a barrier that bugs cross, and the fungus works on them over time. That means you may still see live bugs for a while, and the barrier must be left alone for the period on the label. Disturbing it undermines the method.
Can I clean or vacuum after Aprehend is applied?
Not on the treated strips. Mopping, steam, scrubbing or painting over them can disturb the barrier, and the label sets how long to leave it. We tell you which areas are treated and which parts of the home you can clean as normal. If you are unsure about a specific task, call before you do it.
Is Aprehend a good choice for apartments?
It can be, with conditions. The barrier only covers the unit we treat, so neighbors with bed bugs may still be a source. Frequent traffic between units and a landlord who cannot coordinate neighbors can limit results. We look at the building before recommending it and may suggest a different method or a combined plan.
